Healing Isn’t Linear: Embracing the Spiral

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I thought I already worked through this,” you’re not alone.

Healing—whether from trauma, loss, chronic stress, or deep emotional wounds—is rarely a straight line. It’s more like a spiral. You return to the same places, the same memories, the same stuck points—but with new awareness, new strength, and new tools.

The Myth of “Done”

There was a time I believed healing meant getting over something. I thought once I processed the memory, cried the tears, found the insight, then I was done. Box checked. Wound closed.

But the truth is, we don’t always get over something—we learn to live with it differently. We soften toward it. We make room for it. We stop letting it run the show.

My Own Turning Point with Brainspotting

When I found Brainspotting, I was a seasoned therapist—and also a human who hadn’t escaped life’s messiness. I came to this modality not just as a clinician, but as someone craving deeper healing myself. I had patterns I understood, but couldn’t shift. Emotions I had named, but still carried.

In one of my earliest sessions as a client, I remember locking onto a Brainspot, feeling a wave of emotion rise unexpectedly. I wasn’t thinking; I was experiencing. And that’s what made the difference. I didn’t need to explain or analyze—I just needed to feel, to be witnessed, to let my brain and body do what they naturally know how to do when given the space.

That moment didn’t erase my pain. But it shifted something inside. And the next time that old familiar wound surfaced, it felt less sharp. Less defining. That’s healing.

Loops, Not Failures

You might find yourself circling back to something you thought you’d resolved. That doesn’t mean you failed. It means you’ve grown enough to meet it again from a different place.

One day, you’re holding it together beautifully. The next, you’re crying in your car because a song brought you back to a place you thought you’d left behind. That’s not regression—that’s reality.

Healing happens in layers.

Trust the Process

Whether you're in therapy, using somatic or energy-based modalities like Brainspotting or Reiki, or just doing the daily work of showing up for yourself, know this:

·        Your path is valid, even if it feels messy.

·        Your setbacks are not signs you’re doing it wrong.

·        Your pain doesn't need to be justified or compared to anyone else's.

And most importantly—you are not broken. You’re healing. One layer at a time.
